Turn your ordinary home into a smart home with SmartThings https://www.smartthings.com/homerepair. Get 10% off featured or selected Kits plus free shipping to the US with the code HOMEREPAIR. Home automation is AWESOME. http://www.homerepairtutor.com/how-to-setup-the-smartthings-home-automation-system/ That's one reason I asked SmartThings to send me their Smarter Home Starter Kit. I wanted to check it out because a few weeks back a home was robbed just a few doors down from us. Instead of getting an expensive home security service I decided to review the different home automation options. SmartThings was kind to send me their kit...as an aside, I don't do paid tech or tool reviews, I just like trying new gear :D The Kit allows you to control and monitor your home from your smartphone. This video will show you how to setup and use the SmartThings Smarter Home Starter Kit. This bad boy comes with 6 different devices -SmartThings Hub -Smart Power Outlet -SmartSense Open/Closed Sensors (2) -SmartSense Motion Sensor -SmartSense Presence Sensor The Hub allows the kit to communicate with your smartphone via the SmartThings mobile app. Internet and WIFI are needed. All you have to do is plug the Hub into the power supply, hook it up to the WIFI router using the provide ethernet cable, and then connect it to the SmartThings app on your phone. My personal favorite device is the open/closed sensor because it tells me when our garage door is open or closed. This is great for those of us who have memory problems, lol. Setup is easy, you can totally do it yourself. And there are no monthly fees unlike with traditional home monitoring systems. SmartThings allows you to control lights, locks, thermostats, electronics, and more They even have a water detection sensor that can tell you if you have a water leak...this is something I totally want for our aging hot water tank!!! TIME magazine voted this one of the top 10 gadgets of 2014 and it's a 2015 CES Editor's Choice Award winner. It'll work with Zigbee, ZWave, WIFI and other standards. Plus, you can use it with iOS, Android, and the Windows Phone. To see how it works and the setup process watch my video https://youtu.be/slvieEF0LtY If you liked this video and need more home repair help around your home you might want to subscribe to my YouTube channel by clicking this link and then the Subscribe button https://www.youtube.com/HomeRepairTutor Feel free to share this video with your friends either via email or on Facebook https://youtu.be/slvieEF0LtY There's nothing better than helping a friend out with a DIY video that could make their project go a lot better. Thanks for watching my video, take care, and see you in the next one!! Cheers, Jeff P.S. Amazon affiliate Purchase Info: Wink Hub: http://amzn.to/2cmAJ0v Amazon Echo: http://amzn.to/2d7LCBZ For more information about devices I have connected, visit http://azhb.com/category/amazon-echo/ Today we are going to talk about how you connect your Amazon Echo into a Wink Hub for voice controlled home automation. You can connect the Echo to nearly any smart home hub, but since I have a Wink, we will be using that for the demonstration. After we go through the connection and the setup, we will do some demonstrations of how I have the device connected into my smart home by giving some simple commands. My wife will even give it a try with her Thai accent. You’ll be happy to know that my wife and Alexa get along just fine. The first thing you will do is open up the Amazon Alexa app on your smart phone. When you click the menu, you will see a section called Skills. At the top of the Skills area, you will see a search bar. Enter the brand of smart hub you wish to connect. Again, in my demonstration, we use the Wink Smart Hub. Once you find your hub in the Skills list, click enable. You will get a series of screens that ask for security information about your hub (this will allow the Echo to authenticate to the Wink). At the end of this process you will have successfully linked to your smart home hub. Once you have the smart hub connected to the Echo, you will need to tell the Echo that it needs to find all of the devices in your smart home. “Alexa, discover devices”. ALEXA: “Starting discovery. This could take up to 20 seconds. If you have a Phillips Hue, press the button located on the bridge.” The Echo will come back again in about 20 seconds and tell you how many devices she has found. At that point, all of your devices (except security related devices like locks and garage door openers) are ready to go. ALEXA: “Discovery complete. I found 22 smart home devices. If your Phillips bulbs are not discovered, please press the button on the bridge and rerun discovery.” Another thing that will make it easier for you when you are trying to connect your Echo into your smart home hub is to make sure that all of your devices are named something that you will easily remember. For example, I call my bar light, Bar Light. If you have lighting groups in your Wink Hub, Alexa will not recognize those. You will need to create new groups in your Amazon Alexa app to allow the Echo to acknowledge everything. After you have everything named something you will remember, it’s very simple. For example: “Alexa, turn bar light off.” ALEXA: “OK.” And the bar light turns off. There are more clips in the video that show turning things on and off with the Echo and a special bloopers section at the end of the video. Examples given include: - Controlling fountains through my GE Outdoor Smart Switch - Controlling multiple lights in my office with a single command (using groups) My wife’s attempts (Thai accent included): “Alexa, how are you today?” ALEXA: “Great! Ready to help.” “Alexa, turn off the light in the kitchen” ALEXA: “OK” - the kitchen lights turn off. “Alexa, turn on the light in the kitchen” ALEXA: “OK” - the kitchen lights turn on. Me again, “Alexa, thank you for listening to my wife” ALEXA: “That’s what I am here for?” – She actually said it as a question, which I thought was pretty funny. I did some distance tests, and had to speak rather loudly to get the Echo to hear me when used between rooms (the kitchen and my bar). I also provide a clip where the Echo did not understand a simple command to turn off my greenhouse lights. But that may have been due to a sharp clang caused by my wife putting a frying pan away. All in all I’m pretty happy with the Echo and how it integrated into my smart home. I think that there is a little bit of training you have give to the Amazon Echo, and I think there is a little bit of training that you have to give to yourself and your family members. You have to speak clearly and you have to name things correctly. But other than that I think it’s an amazing experience. We are having a lot of fun with Alexa. If you have specific video requests, leave them in the comments below. I will try to fit them into my production schedule.
